Unusual for the time, Hogarth made many of his own prints. Learn more about printing and the processes that went into making the prints you see on display in the House. Each demo will cover Hogarth as a printmaker, the embossing or drypoint printing technique and a hands-on opportunity to make print your own uniquely designed plate.

Embossing demos at 12.30 and 13.30

Embossing and debossing involve no ink, but are no less stunning! Using shapes and lines, each participant can create and take home their own unique plate and print. This demo is suitable for older children, but with appropriate adult help and support.

Drypoint at 14.30

Intaglio, meaning between the lines, encompasses printing techniques such as engravings and etchings, which are how Hogarth made his prints, as well as the more modern technique of drypoint. Intaglio printing techniques are the opposite of relief printing, such as lino or woodcuts, and require considerably more pressure to print. Each participant will create their own unique design by scratching into the plate using specialist tools, learn how to appropriately ink the plate and prepare their paper and take home their masterpiece. This demo is more suitable for adults and involves the use of oil-based inks.
