Benjamin Hebbert takes a fresh look at one of Hogarth’s most popular engravings, The Enraged Musician, and examines it as the culmination of brutal critiques of Burlington’s Neo-Classical world, demonstrating his intimacy with the Italian artists brought to London by Burlington through to a satirisation of the intimate details of Chiswick House.
Whilst Hogarth published The Enraged Musician in 1741 and did not purchase his home near Chiswick House for another eight years, his knowledge of the interior and exterior of the house are coded with brutal satire that would be easily read by Burlington’s circle.
